Fault-tolerant model predictive control within the hybrid systems framework: Application to sewer networks

چکیده
In this paper, model predictive control (MPC) problem with fault-tolerance capabilities is formulated within the hybrid systems framework. In particular, the mixed logical dynamic form to represent hybrid systems is considered. Using this approach, a hybrid model of the system to be controlled is obtained, which includes inherent hybrid phenomena and possible modes caused by faults occurrence. This allows to adapt the system model on-line by taking into account the fault information provided by a fault diagnosis and isolation module. In this way, the controller can cope with the considered faults. Additionally, different implementation schemes and fault-tolerance evaluation procedures for hybrid MPC (HMPC) considering fault-tolerance capabilities are proposed and discussed. Finally and in order to exemplify the implementation of the proposed approach, it is applied to include actuator fault tolerance in the design of a HMPC controller for a portion of the sewer network of Barcelona. q

Under the city of Barcelona, which has a population of three millions of habitants in an area of 98 Km, there is a complex sewage system with almost 1500 Km of length. That system is characterized for being unitary, that is, its collectors carry rain water and residual water. The yearly rainfall is not very high (600 mm/year), but it includes heavy storms typical of the Mediterranean climate th...

A Fault-Tolerant Control (FTC) methodology has been presented for nonlinear processes being imposed by control input constraints. The proposed methodology uses a combination of Feedback Linearization and Model Predictive Control (FLMPC) schemes. The resulting constraints in the transformed process will be dependent on the actual evolving states, making their incorporation in the de...

Fault-tolerant control methods have been extensively researched over the last 10 years in the context of chemical process control applications, and provide a natural framework for integrating process monitoring and control aspects in a way that not only fault detection and isolation but also control system reconfiguration is achieved in the event of a process or actuator fault. But almost all t...
